Restoration of the ancient town of Heraclea Sintika in the area of Rupite near Petrich

PSP Ltd. carried out a project "Restoration, conservation, protection, promotion and development of the archaeological site "Ancient town of Heraclea Sintika" with adjacent necropolises".

The project is one of the largest in Petrich Municipality. It is executed with combined financing and includes a grant from the Operational Program "Regions in Growth" and a financial mechanism that enables the Municipality to take a low-interest loan to be repaid from revenues from the tourist site.

Within this project, a large part of the archeology was preserved, hiking trails were built, and a connection was made between the individual sites. Observation decks and a visitor center have been built. A parking lot for buses and cars has also been built.

Until now, there has been no dedicated tourist infrastructure to allow people to enter most of the sub-sites in the ancient city. Also a tourist center was missing where tickets could be sold and the relevant information given. This is what Katya Stoyanova, an expert from the Municipal Administration, told BTA.

500 meters from the site is a designated area for socialization. A tourist center, places for food and drinks, a children's camp, as well as a parking lot for camping and caravans, with all modern requirements, will be built there, Stoyanova also pointed out.

According to her, Petrich is already a recognizable tourist destination, and more and more people are talking about the municipality and all that it has as natural resources. This also reflects on socio-economic life. We are already seeing an increase in accommodation, there is more interest in investment in the area, even from people who have nothing to do with it, so in the coming years, when we open the site as well, there will be a very clear and visible the increase in the income and the good results following the implementation of this project, said Stoyanova.

The most important thing from a scientific point of view about the site is that, thanks to this project, we managed to preserve a third of what has been revealed so far, so that the archaeologists can continue their excavations and follow-up study, said Stoyanova.
