Conservation and exhibition of the Ancient Fortress "Borovets" above the village of Razliv

"On July 2, 2022, the ribbon was cut on the renovated site Ancient and Late Antique fortress "Borovets" above the village of Razliv, after 14 years of research. With this, it is ready for inclusion in the national network of cultural sites. The ribbon was cut by Tanya Borisova - Director of the Historical Museum in Pravets, Deyan Nikolov - Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Pravets and Julian Dimov - manager of the company PSP Ltd., which carried out the conservation, exposure and socialization of the fortress.

Little known and difficult to access, the Borovets Ancient Fortress near Pravets is ready to welcome visitors after nearly a year of conservation and exposure activities.

Over 100 tons of material was brought to the fort by horses along the narrow mountain path, due to the lack of other access to the site.

The project activities carried out by the team of the company PSP Ltd. include:

Conservation of fortress walls and remains of buildings inside the fortress
Construction of exhibition paths
Preparation of information boards presenting the history of the site
Filling the paths with stone

Historical Museum - Pravets began the archaeological research already in 2008 under the leadership of the director Tanya Borisova, together with the archaeologists Michaela Zaneva, Valeri Grigorov from the National History Museum at the BAS, later Prof. Rumen Ivanov and Prof. Ventsislav Dimchev also participated. Dimitar Madzharov from Hisar, Reni Lazarova, director of the Botevgrad Historical Museum, helped in the excavations. The head of the project is Krasimir Parvanov.

More than 4 years ago, the Pravets Historical Museum drew up a project with which it applied to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications for funding under the "Bulgaria-Serbia Cross-Border Cooperation Program" and won it with 98.5 points together with the municipality of Surdulica. Restoration and conservation work has been going on for two years. From the fortress "Borovets" there is a view of the other 15 fortresses in the area, including the fortress "Bozhenishki Urvich". Two entrances to the fortress "Borovets" were discovered, 15 buildings inside and one furnace for iron processing were discovered. For 100 linear meters, a powerful fortress wall was exposed, which is best preserved in the northwest corner. The total area of the fortress is 5 acres and 300 m. 17 information boards with QR codes have been installed, which after scanning show augmented reality. For the restoration, 100 tons of stones were loaded with horses.

Let's recall that in 2013, the Municipality of Pravets, under the program for the development of rural areas, built an eco-path to the fortress.

Actors from the Association "Mos Mayorom Upioserdice" (Covenant of the Ancestors of Serdica) for the third year reproduced a late antique reenactment of the late 3rd century to the middle of the 7th century Roman Empire. Among the guests present was the Deputy Mayor of Botevgrad Municipality Boris Borisov and the municipal councilor Nikolina Tsolova. A congratulatory address on the occasion of the opening of the fortress was sent by the regional governor of the Sofia Region, Darina Nikolaeva.

"When the Goths first invaded the Balkans in the 3rd century, they brought with them the cults of their old Germanic gods. Many of which, cults would later survive until the 9th-10th century, only in Scandinavia. In the Balkans, they quickly convert. In the 4th century, the Roman Empire stopped persecuting Christianity, but then, relatively quickly, the empire itself became Christianized. The Goths in Roman territory in the Balkans in the 4th century quickly became Christians.

In appearance they did not differ from other ordinary Christians. The priest wears a tunic or dalmatic, almost to the ground. Also, the priest wears calcei - ordinary Roman shoes, and the solemn liturgical dress is the felon. The color of the felon is according to the possibilities of the priest. Richer priests wear more ornate felons, while poorer ones wear more simple in color and cut felon," said Manol Glishev, a member of "Mos Maiorum Ulpiae Serdicae" (translated as "Customs of the Ancestors of Ulpia Serdicae")"
